Heavy Duty Rakeback Stair Nosing for Commercial & Industrial Staircases

The 63 x 32mm heavy duty aluminium rakeback stair nosing is built for environments where standard-gauge profiles simply are not enough. At 5mm aluminium gauge — compared to the 3mm used in standard profiles — this nosing delivers significantly greater rigidity, impact resistance and long-term performance under sustained foot traffic in commercial, public and industrial settings.

The rakeback riser profile (~83°) is designed specifically for concrete and precast staircases, where the riser face is built at a slight angle rather than true vertical. This ensures a flush, gap-free fit along the full length of the profile with no rocking or movement. A standard anti-slip PVC insert with a grooved surface provides dependable traction in both dry and damp conditions.

Pre-Drilled with Colour-Matched Pips

The profile comes pre-drilled through the insert with colour-matched concealed pips, keeping screw heads hidden once installed. Undrilled and channel-only configurations with separately supplied inserts are also available on request for clean-channel installations. Fixings are not included.

DDA & BS 8300 Compatible

This profile is compatible with DDA requirements and BS 8300:2009+A1:2010, making it a specification-grade choice for public buildings, schools, hospitals, transport hubs and other environments where accessibility compliance is required. Select an insert colour with sufficient LRV contrast against the surrounding stair surface to meet the 30-point minimum contrast requirement.

Where to Use This Profile

Why Choose Heavy Duty (5mm) Over Standard (3mm)?

A standard 3mm stair nosing is adequate for most residential and light commercial applications. In environments with heavy trolley traffic, frequent loaded deliveries, or step counts in the thousands per day, a 3mm profile can flex, loosen fixings, and wear prematurely. The 5mm heavy duty gauge resists bending under impact loads, holds fixings more securely across wider spans, and maintains its profile integrity far longer in demanding conditions. For any project where specification matters and failure is not an option, the heavy duty profile is the correct choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between this and a standard rakeback nosing?

This profile uses 5mm aluminium gauge, compared to the 3mm gauge used in standard rakeback profiles. The heavier gauge provides greater rigidity, higher impact resistance and longer service life under sustained high traffic. The riser angle and fixing method are the same.

Is this suitable for use with carpet tiles?

Yes. The profile is designed for use with carpet, LVT, vinyl and other resilient floor coverings. The tread depth of 63mm provides generous coverage over the stair edge, suitable for most carpet tile thicknesses.

What fixings should I use?

The profile is pre-drilled for screw fixing directly through the insert. For concrete and precast stairs, use masonry screws or anchors appropriate to your substrate. Fixings are not included. Consult your flooring contractor or fixings supplier for the correct specification for your substrate.

Can this be cut to a non-standard length?

Yes. The aluminium profile can be cut cleanly with a mitre saw or angle grinder with a metal cutting disc. Cut before installation and deburr the cut end with a fine file. If cutting to fit, always measure the stair width carefully allowing for any skirting or wall returns.

Is this DDA compliant?

This profile is compatible with DDA requirements and BS 8300:2009+A1:2010. To achieve full compliance, the PVC insert colour must provide a minimum 30-point LRV contrast against the surrounding stair surface. Yellow is the most commonly specified colour for DDA compliance due to its high visibility contrast.
